2017 was an exciting year for GBICS. Since moving operation into our new home at 121 Depot Street one year ago, we’ve expanded food distribution hours renovated the building. Because of these renovations, we’re offering healthy eating, cooking and nutrition programming in our new our community learning kitchen.
The building’s fresh, sunlit spaces are perfect for promoting healthy behaviors and providing access to medical care. Private offices and exam rooms provide confidential and respectful spaces for staff, guests, and patients to meet. The large Community Room is the perfect fit for the Kitchen Cupboard‘s regular food distributions. Plus an airy Conference Room opens onto a sunny patio overlooking the Walloomsac River.
Additionally, we’re working to make the building itself more sustainable as we move into the future. We take our role as stewards of GBICS seriously. Therefore we’re doing everything we can to ensure we’re able to achieve our mission for as long as the need exists. Part of that stewardship is to ensure that building is as economically and environmentally sustainable as possible. Reducing our energy consumption will reduce our operating costs as we go forward. Moreover it will reduce our carbon footprint, making us more environmentally sustainable, which is good for the earth.
We are in the process of undertaking a professional energy audit of 121 Depot Street, so we can continue to make energy efficiency improvements. For example the integration of new technologies for heating, cooling, and lighting, within the scope of our capital improvement plan. Opportunities to support this work through our capital campaign, “The Campaign for 121 Depot Street” are still available. Appointments to discuss potential gifts to the campaign can be made by calling Executive Director Sue Andrews at (802) 447-3700.
